about

The Bitches Present was a funk, jazz, fusion, spoken-word, jam band from San Francisco, California. We had 4 core members: Kyle, Victor, Saam, and Sina; and a rotational 5th spot that cemented with the ever-lovely Joey Natiello. Originally a classic garage-style house-party-playing band, The Bitches Present grew into a cult favorite among the local San Francisco music scene. We played shows, hosted art events, threw parties. It was important for us to foster community and provide spaces where people could connect and share ideas. We read poetry, had live-paintings, audience-interactive discussions, even tacking on a cooking show to our performance. We were called The Bitches Present... because we wanted to present something, to offer a space with an experience larger than your average concert.

I often felt like we were on a warship, fighting for survival in enemy waters. Once the lights went on, it was go, and I would attempt to steer our company through the next hour-long set. Me, at the helm, Victor’s sax and Sina’s bass were artillery, and Saam’s drumming was the strongest engine. We’d look to one another, put our needs above the crowd’s. I still remember looking back from the front of the stage, seeing my boys and I couldn’t be happier doing this with anyone but them. I miss being locked into an hour, sharing one mind, operating 4 bodies, becoming a singular Bitches as we played like our life depended on it. The conversations we had on stage were unlike any other conversation I’ve ever had. Our language weren’t words, but sounds, raising of the eyebrows, a rolling of the eyes, lowkey finger points and secret signals. I felt a part of something larger than myself and it’s a feeling I’ll hold dear for all eternity. Being in that band went beyond making good music and playing fun shows, it was a real family, a real brotherhood, and it has been probably the greatest honor of my life.
—Kyle Menschel

This album is a blast from the past and a message from the future. Both old and new, timeless and eternal. It is a culmination - not just of a band, but of a time and space. The whole is much greater than the sum of its parts. It is egoless. Everyone is stripped down to their bare essentials, giving their all for a greater cause. And its more than just the musicians. Its the artists, the designers, the photographers, the fans - its the scene. So to all of you, you know who you are - thank you!

“There is so much to say about this music.” A successful attempt to do what we do best: communicate, usually without words. Four or five of us go on stage not knowing what is going to happen. All we have with us is our instruments - bass, drums, a mic, my horns, and sometimes a guitar (no synths!)

It takes communication, and a lot of trust, to make it out on the other side. We usually did, but not always. Let us take you back to one of those successes. For two days in Oakland we created a new age. The New Baby Iron Age. Let us welcome you to: The New Baby Iron Age.
